South Platte River

Canyon             Deckers

The South Platte river is known world-wide for being a premium large trout fishery.  Starting below Antero Reservoir, the river begins to hold nice rainbows and browns.  The most popular stretch is between Spinney Mountain Res. and Elevenmile Res.  The state record rainbow (18lbs-5oz) was taken from the Platte as it flows through South Park.  These days, the brown population is as healthy here as anywhere in the state.  You may hear this meandering stretch referred to as 'the miracle mile' (no offense to our friends in Wyoming) or the 'dream stream'.  The fish here are in the same class as those in the Blue River.  Unfortunately, it is extremely popular with fisherman and guides.

Fortunately, for those in the Denver metro area, the South Platte below Cheeseman Reservoir offers trophy-sized rainbows as well.  However, because it is so close to Denver, it also gets heavy angler traffic.  The tailwater below Cheeseman Dam is home to many monster rainbows.  There is a little hike involved to gain access but rarely is the trip not worth it.  As it enters the Deckers area, the river widens and slows, offering fine riffles and runs.  As mentioned above, the fish in the 'canyon' and thru Deckers are wary due to the heavy pressure.  The fish in both sections can be tough to figure out.  Knowing what patterns are hot and concentrating on your presentation can make the trek rewarding.  Because of the different conditions, I've divided the Platte into two pages, 'Canyon' and Deckers.  Directions/weather for both are below.  (The canyon is usually a little cooler and more breezy than Deckers)

Directions:

From Denver, take 85 (Sante Fe Dr.) south about 20 miles to the town of Sedalia.  At Sedalia, take a right on highway 67 about 18 miles southwest to junction with river. At the T-intersection, turn south (left) on cr 97 (South Platte Rd.) 4 miles to Deckers.  To canyon access:  At Deckers, take county road 126 to parking at trailhead 2 miles (20-25 minute hike)

Travel Time Approx 80 minutes
