About the author
My name is Jeff and I have been
flyfishing in the region for 7 years and fly-tying for 4 years.
I moved to Colorado in 1986 and quickly realized that I was going to have
trouble finding the bass and catfish angling I was accustomed to in eastern
Kansas. On previous trips to
Colorado, I had played around with a fly rod but never seriously. My first
experience was chasing cutthroats, with my brothers Jack and Tom, on the Grand
Mesa near Grand Junction, CO. I was formally introduced to the sport by Dan Belger (now my
father-in-law) and Sean Sassaman (brother-in-law).
Dan had been flyfishing the region for quite some time and was initially
helpful with knots, patterns, and information on the quality waters around here.
My initial trips were to the South Platte and were frustrating. Usually, I would flyfish for about an hour, then get fed up
and pull out the spinning gear (small rapalas can be killers on the South
Platte). After some prodding and a fair
amount of peer-pressure, I began leaving the lures at home.
I immediately realized that flyfishing required a higher level of
concentratrion and an ability to read the water, not to mention presentation
techniques and casting. I am still learning on every trip out.
under my
belt. Over the past two years, I
have also began fishing in the Red Feather Lakes area and the Cache La Poudre
River. If I can find the same
quality of fish in the Poudre as I have found in the other rivers, I will be
adding it to this site. I may also
be including some float-tubing information on the site as I become more
experienced on Rocky Mountain lakes. I
currently live in southwest Littleton, CO with my wife who has been
amazing in giving me time to pursue this hobby (Thanks Honey!).
